A quacking corpse

The California tree frog sounds like a duck, but resembles a corpse—at least according to taxonomists, who named it Pseudacris cadaverina for the deathly hue of its skin. It's found in coastal and canyon streams throughout most of coastal southern California, including the NRS's Stunt Ranch Santa Monica Mountains Reserve. Reserve director Gary Bucciarelli studies populations of the frog within the Los Angeles region to develop a management plan for Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area amphibians.
