There are two separate types of positions
1) weather station maintenance
2) weather station data qa/qc
Google doc describing the duties of the maintenance person.
We are proposing that type 1) will be split into two 0.5FTE positions, one located in Todd Dawson’s lab, and one at UCI. In preliminary discussions with Mike Goulden, it sounds like the most effect use of the funds at UCI is to internally contract with the Instrument Development Facility as this is exactly the kind of thing they do.
Both of these positions will be responsible for the routine maintenance of the stations, and will go to the 30 odd stations around the state. It looks like the best split is Sedgwick south with SNARL and White Mountain added for the UCI position, and Rancho Marino north for the Berkeley position.
Type 2) will be located at Berkeley and will monitor the data feed into the Ecoengine. Initially they will be setting up the feed, and doing the configuration work for serving the data into the engine.
From a hiring point of view is it much easier to partially fund an existing position than to hire a new one, and I agree as the need increases we will need to reassess if staffing levels are sufficient. For now I feel that working with known entities with the skills that we need and who are already working in that space and with the databases is the best way forward.
