Here is an overdue update on the status of the weather station maintenance and some good news regarding the future. Peggy and her team have been working towards getting this added as a permanent line item in the NRS budget, and have had some success!
We have finalized a contract with DRI/WRCC for data management and maintenance of NRS sites for this calendar year. Kevin is working with DRI to finalize the schedule – they should be at reserves later this month. They will do the maintenance in regional chunks, starting with the southern reserves and moving north. The contract is for continued data management and for maintenance of one station per reserve. This expands the original NSF-funded network to a few more reserves which have subsequently gotten equipment or have rehabbed stations to be compatible with the NSF-funded sites.
What we need from you (send to Kevin): Pictures of your station’s equipment so that DRI can gage the condition of the sensors and have the proper equipment on hand for their visit. If you have communication issues, Kevin plans to troubleshoot those in advance as well.
As Peggy previously reported, she managed to secure a second year of maintenance funding. We are looking at the best way to leverage these funds by working with groups like Keck Hydrowatch and ISEECI that have (or will have) instrumentation on NRS reserves. This may entail hiring a person to do maintenance on the stations working with all of us.
Additionally, we have been awarded an another year’s worth of funding by the Provost to support these efforts and to give us a chance to document the metrics showing how the data are used. The hope is that with supporting metrics, this will be approved for permanent funding. This allocation of funds, along with the already awarded funds, will allow us to put the foundational work in with Berkeley for the transition of data and data flow from DRI to the Ecoinformatics Engine.
What we need from you: Over the next 12 months or so, we need you to keep track of who is asking you for weather and climate data. We will have analytics in place to capture the information if people access it through the online interface, but please do let us know if you are working with anyone directly.
Thanks to the UCOP team for their continued efforts on our behalf!
Becca, Kevin, Shane and the IMC team!
