Wildfires ravage six NRS reserves

Wildfires sparked by lightning and arson have severely burned six reserves. Thousands of acres burned across Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve (in photo), Hastings Natural History Reservation, Blue Oak Ranch Reserve, Quail Ridge Reserve, Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve, and McLaughlin Natural Reserve, while one NRS staffer lost his reserve residence. Meanwhile, Point Reyes Field Station housed fire crews battling the Woodward fire in Point Reyes National Seashore. Read more and learn how you can help >>

Sagehen ArtSciConverge

Sagehen Creek Field Station has been hosting place-based art that encourages new ways of thinking about science and the environment since 2011. Former reserve directors Jeff Brown and Faerthen Felix established an artist-in-residency program at Sagehen with the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno. Works inspired by these residencies, as well as artifacts representing performance pieces, were scheduled to go on exhibit this spring at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. Although the coronavirus outbreak canceled the exhibit, you can still enjoy Sagehen's ArtSciConverge program and learn about the artworks themselves from a recorded webinar and the exhibit catalog.

California's Prop. 84 initiative helped pay for the reconstruction of stream flow structures and the reserve's access road, as well as a brand new, energy neutral lecture hall. Read more >>

New NRS Biosphere reserve

The NRS's Point Reyes Field Station is now an official part of the Golden Gate Biosphere Reserve. Administered by UNESCO, the Man and the Biosphere Programme employs science to harmonize relationships between people and their environments, and improve human livelihoods while safeguarding natural ecosystems. With this designation, Point Reyes Field Station joins six other NRS reserves that are already part of the program.
