The NRS Metadata Database is the most comprehensive source of information about the scientific research datasets collected within the NRS. You can use it to search for existing datasets about the NRS, obtain contact information about dataset owners, and facilitate research collaborations and data sharing.
Metadata describes a dataset's content, structure, and research context, but is not the dataset itself.
Submitting metadata for the first time
If this is your first time submitting to the NRS metadata database, we recommend that you establish an account with the Knowledge Network for Biocomplexity (KNB). KNB houses the NRS's Metadata Database. For additional information, please reference the Guide to the Metadata Catalog System.
Having a KNB account will allow you to enter your data, make changes to that data in the future, and search any additional, non-public data to which you may have access privileges.
When you are ready to enter catalog entries or if you have any questions, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Enter information about your dataset
There are two ways to add information to the NRS Metadata Database. The first is to type in your metadata by hand using our online form. The second is to import it via the NRS's Reserve Application Management System RAMS).
To enter your metadata by hand
If you aren't in the NRS's Reserve Application Management System (RAMS), please type your metadata into our online form.
To import your metadata from RAMS
If you are already in the NRS's Reserve Application Management System (RAMS) because you've previously visited a reserve, you can import most of your project's metadata into KNB from RAMS.
1. Log in to RAMS. The Application page will list all your applications. Research applications come with the option to "Submit Metadata" using this button.
2. You will be taken to a page where all your application data has been entered into a form. Please review the form's data and add more information if needed. Then submit the form using the "Submit Data Set Description" button.
3. You will be taken to the KNB website. Enter your KNB login information at the bottom of the page, then submit your data.
